Candlemas

Beeswax Candles

Light. Something that makes things visible. Symbolizes joy, optimism, goodness, purity, beauty, dignity, and life - light is created by God. "And God said: Be light made. And light was made. And God saw the light that it was good, and he divided the light from darkness." Genesis 1:3-4. Christ declares, "As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world" John 9:5. The candle's light has come to signify His presence.

Beeswax made of virgin bees represents the body of Christ through the Virgin Mary. The wick represents His soul - His humanity running through the length of the candle. The flame signifies His dignity. Jesus Christ lights the path with His divine fire and call. It consumes the wax to give light. It burns, sacrificing itself, as Christ sacrificed Himself. "I am come to cast fire on the earth: and what will I, but that it be kindled?." Luke 12:49.

Candlemas Day: February 2. The Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Have your beeswax candles blessed this day by your priest at mass. In addition, every family should have a blessed beeswax candle in their home to be lit during times of peril or adversity.

We are called to be lights of revelation to all around us.
